最早见于1402年，意为“凌乱的女人”。与荷兰语 slodder、瑞典语〈方〉 slata（懒女人）同源。 < 晚期中古英语 slutte < 中古英语 slut（泥）。更古的语源未知。另对比瑞典语 slutr（冻雨、不纯液体）。
