源自中世紀拉丁語 hȳlē (“物质；万物之基本，原質”)（參見英語 hyle），音譯自古希臘語 ὕλη (húlē, “木材；材料，物质”) 或 πρώτη ὕλη (prṓtē húlē, “基本物质”)。“原質”的概念由古希臘哲學家亞里士多德提出。
