源自荷蘭語 vrolijk (欢喜的),源自中古荷蘭語 vrolijc,源自古荷蘭語 frōlīk,源自原始日耳曼語 *frawalīkaz。对比德語 fröhlich (开心的,快乐的)

前一个元素,最终源自原始日耳曼語 *frawaz并与中古英語 frow (匆忙的)同源;之后的元素,最终源自*-līkaz并与-ly-like同源。
