借自中古法語 transpirer,源自中世紀拉丁語 transpirare (“通过...呼吸”),源自拉丁語 trans (“穿过”) spirare (“呼吸”)。“为人所知”一意也出现于法语内,但是“发生”没有。可能后者是在英语内基于前者衍生出来的。
