借自中古法語 transpirer,源自中世紀拉丁語 transpirare (「通過...呼吸」),源自拉丁語 trans (「穿過」) spirare (「呼吸」)。「為人所知」一意也出現於法語內,但是「發生」沒有。可能後者是在英語內基於前者衍生出來的。

詞義「發生」可能產生於對「為人所知」一意的誤解,後者又是原意「散發出」的一個比喻義。一些評論家認為這樣的用法是錯誤做作的,不應使用。但是,這個用法可追溯回18世紀,且自19世紀以來即已普及。
