源自中古英语 yesterday、yisterday、ȝesterdai、ȝisterdai，源自古英语 ġiestrandæġ、ġister dæġ、ġestor dæġ、ġeostran dæġ，等同于yester- + day。对比低地苏格兰语 yisterday、yesterday (“昨天”)、哥特语 𐌲𐌹𐍃𐍄𐍂𐌰𐌳𐌰𐌲𐌹𐍃 (gistradagis, “明天”, 副词)。也对比关系更远的荷兰语 gisteren、德语 gestern。

- 复数 yesterdays 不常用，使用情境一般是诗歌语，用“过去”义，如“all our yesterdays have come back to haunt us”。
- 带 /ˈjɪ-/ 音的读法现在属于方言，但过去标准语也使用。如作家、发音研究者托马斯·谢里丹就曾在著作中表示不推荐该种读法。[2]
