作為名詞最早見於1785年。通過西印度群島皮欽語借自法語 savez(-vous) (“你知道嗎”), 葡萄牙語 (você) sabe (“你知道”)或西班牙語 (usted) sabe (“你知道”)，源自通俗拉丁語 *sapere ← 拉丁語 sapere (“智慧的，知道”) (參見sapient)。形容詞最早見於1905年。
