源自中古英語 cenyth,源自中世紀拉丁語 cenit,源自阿拉伯語 سَمْت(samt, 方向,小路),源自完整形式سَمْت اَلرَّأْس(samt ar-raʔs, 头的朝向)。以-ni--m-的情况有时被认为是误读了三个笔画。这个说法确实有道理,但是也可能只是发音模仿导致的。
