各种文字系统按它们表示词语的方式分类。
- Category:元音附标文字：Scripts whose symbols represent consonant and vowel combinations. Symbols representing the same consonant combined with different vowels are for the most part similar in form.
- Category:全音素文字：Scripts whose symbols represent individual speech sounds.
- Category:语素文字：Scripts whose symbols represent individual words.
- Category:辅音音素文字：Scripts whose basic symbols represent consonants. Some of these are impure abjads, which have letters for some vowels.
- Category:音节文字：Scripts whose symbols represent consonant and vowel combinations. Symbols representing the same consonant combined with different vowels are for the most part different in form.
