源自英国。一类似谚语记载于1866年的威尔士，彭布罗克郡：“Eat an apple on going to bed, / And you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.”[1]但是，苹果能治病的说法甚为古老。在英国作家John Clavell（1601年-1643年）所著戏剧The Soddered Citizen（首次演出约1631–1633年）中，有情节暗示胃灼热的人吃苹果后睡上一觉，第二天就会痊愈。[2]
