源自中古英語 gawnt、gawnte (“瘦的”),源自古法語 [具體何詞?],可能源自斯堪的纳维亚或北日耳曼語支源头,与古諾爾斯語 gandr (“魔杖,棍”)有关,源自原始日耳曼語 *gandaz (“棍”),源自原始印歐語 *gʷʰen- (“打,驱使”)。
与冰島語 gandur (“魔杖”)、挪威語 gand (“高而尖的棒子;又高又瘦的人”)、丹麥語 gand、gan、挪威語 gana (“修剪的树枝”)、巴伐利亞語 Gunten (“一种楔或钉”)。亦与古英語 gūþ (“战斗”)、拉丁語 dēfendō (“抵挡,避开,防御”)有关。亦对比瑞典語方言用词gank (“瘦马”)。
