词源编辑

源自中古英语 gawnt、gawnte (“瘦的”)，源自古法语 [具体何词?]，可能源自斯堪的纳维亚或北日耳曼语支源头，与古诺尔斯语 gandr (“魔杖，棍”)有关，源自原始日耳曼语 *gandaz (“棍”)，源自原始印欧语 *gʷʰen- (“打，驱使”)。

与冰岛语 gandur (“魔杖”)、挪威语 gand (“高而尖的棒子；又高又瘦的人”)、丹麦语 gand、gan、挪威语 gana (“修剪的树枝”)、巴伐利亚语 Gunten (“一种楔或钉”)。亦与古英语 gūþ (“战斗”)、拉丁语 dēfendō (“抵挡，避开，防御”)有关。亦对比瑞典语方言用词gank (“瘦马”)。
