(1400年代中期),源自中古英語 stote (貂,夏天棕色皮毛的),来源不详。该单词和古諾爾斯語 stutr (公牛)瑞典語 stut (公牛)丹麥語 stud (阉公牛)(另见英語 stot)有点类似,但难以将它们的语义关联起来,除非它们共有一个来源“(棕色?)雄性哺乳动物”。
