（1400年代中期），源自中古英語 stote (“貂，夏天棕色皮毛的”)，来源不详。该单词和古諾爾斯語 stutr (“公牛”)、瑞典語 stut (“公牛”)和丹麥語 stud (“阉公牛”)（另见英語 stot）有点类似，但难以将它们的语义关联起来，除非它们共有一个来源“（棕色？）雄性哺乳动物”。
