(1400年代中期),源自中古英語 stote (貂,夏天棕色皮毛的),來源不詳。該單詞和古諾爾斯語 stutr (公牛)瑞典語 stut (公牛)丹麥語 stud (閹公牛)(另見英語 stot)有點類似,但難以將它們的語義關聯起來,除非它們共有一個來源「(棕色?)雄性哺乳動物」。
