（1400年代中期），源自中古英語 stote (「貂，夏天棕色皮毛的」)，來源不詳。該單詞和古諾爾斯語 stutr (「公牛」)、瑞典語 stut (「公牛」)和丹麥語 stud (「閹公牛」)（另見英語 stot）有點類似，但難以將它們的語義關聯起來，除非它們共有一個來源「（棕色？）雄性哺乳動物」。
