源自古法语 apotecaire，源自中世纪拉丁语 apothecarius (“店主”)，源自apotheca (“商店”)，早期形式拉丁语 apotheca (“仓库”)，源自古希腊语 ἀποθήκη (apothḗkē, “仓库”)，源自ἀπό (apó, “出，离”) + τίθημι (títhēmi, “放置”)，即“用来把东西放起来的地方”。boutique and bodega的同源对似词。
