源自中古英语 ordel、ordal，源自中世纪拉丁语 ordālium或其源头古英语 ordēl、ordāl (“磨难，审判”)，源自原始西日耳曼语 *uʀdailī (“审判”)，源自*uʀdailijan (“分配，配给”)，等价于or- +‎ deal。

与萨特弗里斯兰语 Uurdeel (“判决”)、西弗里斯兰语 oardiel (“审判”)、荷兰语 oordeel (“审判”)、低地德语 Oordeel (“判决”)、德语 Urteil (“判断，判决”)同源。
