继承自中古英语 fesaunt、fesant，来自古法语 fesan，来自拉丁语 phāsiānus，来自古希腊语 φᾱσιανός (phāsianós)，意思是 “Φᾶσις (Phâsis) 河的[鸟]”，据推测，鸟从那里向西传播。取代本土的古英语 wōrhana，mōrhana的变体。参见moorhen。
