派生自公元前一世紀的菲得洛斯寓言。寓言中,有一個禿子打落在自己頭上的蒼蠅,但卻給了自己的頭一擊。蒼蠅說:「你因為我碰了你你就想殺我,那你現在在傷口上撒鹽(added insult to injury),你要對自己做什麼呢?」首個英語內的措辭記載出現於18世紀中葉。
