源自北日耳曼語支。可能與挪威語 flanta (炫耀,四處走)冰島語 flana (四處走,匆匆忙忙)法語 flâner (四處走,晃蕩)有關。

還有說法稱,其可能與瑞典語 flankt (松垮地)(對比英語 flaunt-a-flaunt)有關,其源自flanka (搖晃),其為flakka (搖擺)的鼻音化變體,與中古英語 flacken (來回走,顫動)有關。還見flack
