來自古希臘語 καλός (kalós, 「美麗」) + εἶδος (eîdos, 「形狀」)（對照-oid） +‎ -scope。1817年由發明家大衛·布儒斯特所創。

用作比喻義則是1819年的拜倫勳爵從出版社那邊收到一個萬花筒而來。
