編輯借自新拉丁語 molybdaenum,來自molybdaena (「任何像鉛的物質」),來自古希臘語 μολύβδαινα (molúbdaina, 「鉛墜,一塊鉛」),來自μόλυβδος (mólubdos, 「鉛;石墨」),來自安那托利亞語族詞彙同源的呂底亞語 𐤪𐤠𐤭𐤦𐤥𐤣𐤠 (mariwda, 「黑暗」),來自原始印歐語 *morkʷ-iyo-,來自詞根*morkʷ- (「暗」),與英語 murk同源。[1]參見拉丁語 plumbum nigrum (「鉛」)。後綴為 + -um (「化學元素」)。
