源自中古英語 plommet (鉛球,擺錘),自1382年有書面記錄,源自古法語 plommet或者plometplomplum (測深錘)的指小詞,源自拉丁語 plumbum ()。動詞最早記錄見於1626年,表示「測量,測深」,其源自名詞。
