可能借自意第緒語 שנויץ (shnoyts),其源自德語 Schnauze (鼻子)[1][2]對比schnozzle。另一較少見理論認為其是一個受到schm-的影響或者和意第緒語單詞聯想而得到的nose的變體。[3]至少1940年起已可考。
