源自拉丁語 syncretismus ← 古希臘語 συγκρητισμός (sunkrētismós, “克里特城邦的聯合”) ← συγκρητίζω (sunkrētízō, “聯合以對抗共同敵人”) ← σύν (sún, “一同”) （參見英語syn-） + Κρῆτες (Krêtes, “克里特人”)。等同於syn- +‎ Crete +‎ -ism（“克里特人聯合”）。
