源自中古英語 Excalaber，源自古法語 Escalibor、Escaliborc，Calliborc的修复形式，其为Calibourne的变换形式，源自中世紀拉丁語 Caliburnus（Geoffrey of Monmouth，约1136年），受到了calibs (“steel”)的影响（因为chalybs），变换自古威爾士語 Caledbulch（对比现代Caledfwlch），其为由caled (“硬的”)和bwlch (“裂缝”)构成的复合词。与愛爾蘭語中的圣剑名Caladbolg有关，其字面意思为“坚硬的腹部”，即“贪婪的”。

在亚瑟王的传说故事中，年轻的亚瑟王成功地将石中剑拔出，证明了自己的命运是成为王。当他当上王以后，湖夫人将一把剑赠给了他。在早期版本的传说中，这把湖中剑就是王者之剑，而另有版本说，湖夫人所赠的剑才是王者之剑。近来的故事复述将两把剑描述为同一把剑。
