源自中古英語 Excalaber，源自古法語 Escalibor、Escaliborc，Calliborc的修復形式，其為Calibourne的變換形式，源自中世紀拉丁語 Caliburnus（Geoffrey of Monmouth，約1136年），受到了calibs (「steel」)的影響（因為chalybs），變換自古威爾士語 Caledbulch（對比現代Caledfwlch），其為由caled (「硬的」)和bwlch (「裂縫」)構成的複合詞。與愛爾蘭語中的聖劍名Caladbolg有關，其字面意思為「堅硬的腹部」，即「貪婪的」。

用法說明 編輯
在亞瑟王的傳說故事中，年輕的亞瑟王成功地將石中劍拔出，證明了自己的命運是成為王。當他當上王以後，湖夫人將一把劍贈給了他。在早期版本的傳說中，這把湖中劍就是王者之劍，而另有版本說，湖夫人所贈的劍才是王者之劍。近來的故事複述將兩把劍描述為同一把劍。
