编辑源自早期形式elritch,其词源不详。一般认为后半部分-ritch是古英語 rīċe (“王国”)(参见riche)。一部分人认为前半部分el-派生自一个指“外来,陌生”的古英语词根(与古英語 ellende和现代英语else有关),有些人则认为其派生自elf。[1][2]因霍华德·菲利普斯·洛夫克拉夫特的著作而重新引入大众文学。
