词源

源自早期形式elritch，其词源不详。一般认为后半部分-ritch是古英语 rīċe (“王国”)（参见riche）。一部分人认为前半部分el-派生自一个指“外来，陌生”的古英语词根（与古英语 ellende和现代英语else有关），有些人则认为其派生自elf。因霍华德·菲利普斯·洛夫克拉夫特的著作而重新引入大众文学。
