源自中古英語 unruly (“不安定的，骚动的”)，等价于un- +‎ rule +‎ -ly（对比中古英語 ruly、reuli (“符合教规的”)），但也是早期形式中古英語 unrouly、unroly (“unquiet, restless”)的变换形式，等价于un- +‎ roolie。后者源自古諾爾斯語 *úróligr或受其影响，与丹麥語 urolig (“骚动的”)、瑞典語 orolig (“骚动的”)、冰島語 órólegur (“激动的”)有关。亦对比中古英語 unroo、unro (“焦虑”)。详见roo。
