编辑源自中古英语 unruly (“不安定的,骚动的”),等价于un- + rule + -ly(对比中古英语 ruly、reuli (“符合教规的”)),但也是早期形式中古英语 unrouly、unroly (“unquiet, restless”)的变换形式,等价于un- + roolie。后者源自古诺尔斯语 *úróligr或受其影响,与丹麦语 urolig (“骚动的”)、瑞典语 orolig (“骚动的”)、冰岛语 órólegur (“激动的”)有关。亦对比中古英语 unroo、unro (“焦虑”)。详见roo。
