源自中古英語 unruly (不安定的,騷動的),等價於un- +‎ rule +‎ -ly(對比中古英語 rulyreuli (符合教規的)),但也是早期形式中古英語 unroulyunroly (unquiet, restless)的變換形式,等價於un- +‎ roolie。後者源自古諾爾斯語 *úróligr或受其影響,與丹麥語 urolig (騷動的)瑞典語 orolig (騷動的)冰島語 órólegur (激動的)有關。亦對比中古英語 unroounro (焦慮)。詳見roo
