晚期中古英语,源自盎格鲁-诺曼语 cotage和中世纪拉丁语 cotagium,源自古诺曼语 cot、cote (“小屋,村舍”) + -age (“地产周边”),源自原始日耳曼语 *kutan、*kuta- (“棚屋”),可能源自印欧语系以外,但也可能借自乌拉尔语系,对比芬兰语 kota (“小屋,房子”)和匈牙利语 ház (“房子”),两者均源自原始芬兰-乌戈尔语/原始乌拉尔语 *kota。但亦对比荷兰语和英语 hut。[1][2]
古北方法语cote可能是源自古诺尔斯语 kot (“小屋”),与亦来自原始日耳曼语的古英语 cot同源。
俚语义“公厕”自19世纪,由于两者外观相似。
