源自中古英语 herken、herkien,源自古英语 *hercian、*heorcian、*hiercian,最终源自原始日耳曼语 *hauzijaną (“听”) + 程度加强-k(另见相关词hīeran,其派生出英语 hear)。等价于hear + -k。与低地苏格兰语 herk (“倾听”)、北弗里斯兰语 harke (“倾听”)、西弗里斯兰语 harkje (“听”)、现已弃用的荷兰语 horken (“听”)、中古低地德语 horken (“倾听”)、德语 horchen (“倾听”)同源。
