源自中古英语 ierarchiejerarchie,源自古法语 ierarchiejerarchie,源自晚期拉丁语 ierarchia,源自拉丁语 hierarchia,源自古希腊语 ἱεραρχία (hierarkhía, (大祭司的)统治),源自ἱεράρχης (hierárkhēs, 大祭司),源自ἱερός (hierós, 神圣的) + ἄρχω (árkhō, 统治)。受到古典拉丁语的影响,约1500年时“h”被重新添加。
