编辑源自中古英语 huske。可能源自古英语 *husuc, *hosuc (“很小的覆盖物”)，hosu (“壳，皮”)的指小词，源自原始西日耳曼语 *hosā，源自原始日耳曼语 *husǭ、*hausaz (“覆盖物，壳，裹腿”)，源自原始印欧语 *kawəs- / kawes- (“盖”)。若如此，等价于hose + -ock。
另可能源自中古低地德语 hūske(n) (“小房子，保护套”)、中古荷兰语 hūskijn (“小房子，果核，盒子”)，hūs (“房子”)的指小词。对比荷兰语 huisje、德语 Häuschen，两者均可指“蜗牛壳”。
