編輯源自中古蘇格蘭語 confide、confyde (「相信」)，源自拉丁語 confīdere (「相信，信任」)，[1]，源自con- (「一起」) + fidēre (「信任」)。17世紀初葉首次出現於英語中。[1][2]faith和fidelity 的同源對似詞。
