源自新拉丁語 ephemerus，源自古希臘語 ἐφήμερος (ephḗmeros)，ἐφημέριος (ephēmérios, 「僅持續一天的；僅在白天的；僅存活一天的；短命的；暫時的」)的更常見形式，源自ἐπί (epí, 「在...之上，在」) + ἡμέρα (hēméra, 「一天」)。
