編輯副詞可能派生自盎格魯-諾曼語 gençur和古法語 gençor、gensor (「更美麗的，更禮貌的」) [以及其他形式] + 英語 -ly (副詞構成後綴)。gençor是gent (「美麗的，英俊的；貴族的，高貴的；禮貌的，彬彬有禮的；流利的；禮貌地；高雅地」)的比較級，[1]源自晚期拉丁語 *gentus，拉丁語 genitus (「出身（好）的」)的變體，gignō (「結，成為...之父；導致，產生」)的被動完成時分詞，[2] 最終源自原始印歐語 *ǵenh₁- (「使...誕生；產生」)。
《牛津英語詞典》指出，盎格魯-諾曼語和古法語的12世紀的文獻，以及13世紀以後才可考的現代法語詞之間存在一個幾個世紀的缺口。因而若現代英語詞源自盎格魯-諾曼語和古法語詞，則必須是經由口頭或已失傳的文獻傳入的（可能是作為舞蹈界的術語）。[1]
形容詞派生自副詞，可能是因為-ly亦是一個形容詞構成後綴。[1]
