来自拉丁语 GermānusGermānī (“来自Germānia的民族”),不同于Gauls (在凯撒和塔西佗的著作中),最初源头不明 (可能是凯尔特语族/高卢语)。

german (关系密切的)germane无关 (来自拉丁语形容词germānus,经由古法语)。

至少在1520年开始出现。取代了英语中较早的术语AlmainDutch (来自原始日耳曼语 *þiudiskaz)。除了德语、日耳曼语、荷兰语的同源词外,其他语言中表示德国人的两类词源一个是Saxon的同源词和原始斯拉夫语 *němьcь的派生词;更多资讯参阅这些条目。
