源自中古英语 large，源自古法语 large，源自拉丁语 larga，largus (“富余的，大量的，大的，多的”)的阴性形式，最终词源不详。很大程度上取代了中古英语 stoor, stour (“大的”)（源自古英语 stōr）和muchel (“大的”)（源自古英语 myċel）。
