源自中古英語 couren、cowre，源自中古低地德語 kûren (「潛伏；遊蕩」)或北日耳曼語支（冰島語 kúra (「打盹」)）。同源詞包括德語 kauern (「蹲伏」)、荷蘭語 koeren (「蹲守」)、塞爾維亞-克羅地亞語 kutriti (「躺着縮成一團」)、瑞典語 kura (「蜷縮」)。與coward無關，其源自拉丁語。
