詞源

Hello（最早可考於1826年），源自holla、hollo（可考於1588年）。人們常認為這一hallo的變體是由托馬斯·愛迪生為電話中使用造出的，但其在電話發明的幾十年前就已經有書面使用。

最終源自古英語ēalā的變體，如hēlā，其類似於現在使用的hey和hi。因此等價於hey和lo構成的複合詞。用來喚起別人的注意。

可能受到了古撒克遜語 halo!的影響，其為halōn (「喊，抓」)的命令式，為渡船船夫呼喊時使用，與古高地德語 hala、hola!有關，其為halōn、holōn (「抓取」)的命令式。詳見hallo。
