源自中古英语 welcome、wolcume、wulcume、wilcume，源自古英语 wilcuma （“受欢迎的宾客”，亦对比 wilcume (“欢迎！”, 叹词)），源自原始西日耳曼语 *willjakwemō，源自原始日耳曼语 *wiljakwemô (“期望的现身或宾客”)，可能源自*wiljakwemaną (“受欢迎”)，等价于will (“希望”) + come (“到达，来临，光临”)。该词下半部分的“宾客”一意不再为人所理解后，其中的wil-被替换为了wel-，可能是受到了副词well的影响。同源词包括低地苏格兰语 walcome、西弗里斯兰语 wolkom、荷兰语 welkom（早期形式willecome）、德语 willkommen、德国低地德语 willkamen、丹麦语 velkommen、书面挪威语 velkommen、新挪威语 velkomen、velkommen、瑞典语 välkommen、冰岛语 velkominn、法罗语 vælkomin和古法语 wilecome（→中古法语 willecomme (“欢迎”)），源自日耳曼语族。
