源自中古英語 welcome、wolcume、wulcume、wilcume，源自古英語 wilcuma （「受歡迎的賓客」，亦對比 wilcume (「歡迎！」, 嘆詞)），源自原始西日耳曼語 *willjakwemō，源自原始日耳曼語 *wiljakwemô (「期望的現身或賓客」)，可能源自*wiljakwemaną (「受歡迎」)，等價於will (「希望」) + come (「到達，來臨，光臨」)。該詞下半部分的「賓客」一意不再為人所理解後，其中的wil-被替換為了wel-，可能是受到了副詞well的影響。同源詞包括低地蘇格蘭語 walcome、西弗里斯蘭語 wolkom、荷蘭語 welkom（早期形式willecome）、德語 willkommen、德國低地德語 willkamen、丹麥語 velkommen、書面挪威語 velkommen、新挪威語 velkomen、velkommen、瑞典語 välkommen、冰島語 velkominn、法羅語 vælkomin和古法語 wilecome（→中古法語 willecomme (「歡迎」)），源自日耳曼語族。
