源自中古英语 ei, ey，来自古英语 ǣġ，来自原始西日耳曼语 *aij，来自原始日耳曼语 *ajją，来自原始印欧语 *h₂ōwyóm。
英语在16世纪被古诺尔斯语派生的egg代替，可能是因为“ey”和eye相似。
